You may have seen on a previous post I recently went to a lake with my friend Khaila Coleman to participate in some photography with her. I became really interested in the photos she presented me and decided to pursue further. So, I sat down with Khaila to discuss further her hobby of photography.
As we discussed her hobby she began telling me about her trip to Japan which featured some of her favorite photos.
What makes a photo Happen

Khaila took the above photo on her way to Tokyo, Japan. In our interview Khaila explained that she doesn’t have a specific desire for nature photography. When I asked about it in regards to the photograph above she stated, “Really, I prefer capturing the whole spectrum of things. If there is something that catches my eye, I’m going to take a photo of it. Whether that’s in the mountains, or in New Orleans”.
The Purpose of Photography and Advice
Khaila also said photography has taught her to see a lot more beauty in the world and taught her to see a lot more art in places you wouldn’t expect to find it. She says that this has improved her life in many more ways than behind the camera. It allows her to connect with the world around her deeper through the images she produces.

Khaila believes the best advice for new photographers is “Whenever you are just getting into it don’t worry so much about how it looks, or how they come out. Just go out there and take pictures and just practice. You can get so caught up in taking the prettiest Instagram photo, but you really will get the best experience just by doing it.”
Telling Stories
My favorite point of the interview was when I asked Khaila why she does photography rather than other hobbies. She responded, “Well, I guess it’s because it is just what speaks to me you know. It allows me to combine a lot of different hobbies I do like, but not as much. Like writing and traditional art in that when taking a photograph you’re not just taking a snapshot of what your’e seeing, you are composing a story and you are composing an artwork but with the camera.”

Khaila has taken many photos in her life and has come to believe that not all passions are worth a financial pursuit. Despite her photos being wonderful and displaying a clear level of skill she has found that trying to turn it into a profession takes away from the soul of the project, as well as the fun. So, she has chosen to keep her photography practice a hobby
